Anyone interested in an xemacs port of this? The preview-LaTeX package Here is the current README. Purpose of the package is to embed LaTeX environments such as display math or figures into the source buffers. By mouse-clicking, you can open the original text. After editing, another click will just run the region in question through LaTeX and redisplay the new results. Here is a screenshot. In practice, you might want to leave off the textmath conversion option, since it currently causes redisplay to get rather slow. Hopefully, this will improve in future Emacs versions. You need to have access to Emacs version 21.0.105 at least, a pretest version. No XEmacs support as to yet, volunteers welcome. http://preview-latex.sourceforge.net

xemacs-21.1.14 Revet Buffer on HP-UX 11.0 causes core dump 24 years

Xemacs, I originally sent e-mail to Adrian.aichner(a)t-online.de. Adrian said to send it here. All that is needed to recreate the error, is to xemacs any C file and once it is loaded just ask to "File Revert Buffer" and you get a core dump. Here is the C stack Backtrace results. It doesn't look like much to me but I have never looked at one before. XEmacs 21.4.4 "Artificial Intelligence" is released. 24 years

* XEmacs 21.4.4 "Artificial Intelligence" is released. "Artificial Intelligence" is the fifth in the OXYMORON series. Relative to XEmacs 21.4.3 "Academic Rigor", it contains a few typo fixes in the documentation, some minor bugfixes in the user interface, and some fixes to critical bugs, mostly in the MS Windows code. *** MS Windows users should NOT upgrade to 21.4.4 unless you *** *** are prepared to help debug certain known problems. Wait *** *** for 21.4.5. *** Unfortunately, there seems to be a bad bug somewhere in the new code for MS Windows, which causes frequent crashes. The primary Windows developer is currently out of the country, and I am about to leave for two weeks of vacation. So I decided to release "Artificial Intelligence" on the strength of the improvements on other platforms, and be prepared to make a new release to address the MS Windows issues and a few other pending patches immediately on my return. More detailed information about the changes is presented below. The first release in this series, Xemacs 21.4.0 "Solid Vapor", contained a large number of improvements and extensions to the current stable version, XEmacs 21.1.14. For more information about the OXYMORON series, see etc/NEWS, the initial release announcement http://www.xemacs.org/Releases/21.4.0.html and the release planning page, http://www.xemacs.org/Releases/Public-21.2/. For general information about XEmacs, the developers, and the user community, see our home page, http://www.xemacs.org/. * XEmacs 21.4.4 is "gamma" software. Besides the usual "no warranty" disclaimer (see etc/WARRANTY, sections 10 and 11), we are now experimenting with a level of stability intermediate between "beta" and "stable", dubbed "gamma". At this point all the developers and most of our beta testers trust the 21.4 code base with all their editing needs. However, for several reasons, for users who absolutely must minimize risk, we continue to recommend the 21.1 series. It seems likely that 21.4.5 will be released in about 3 weeks when I return from abroad, to address the MS Windows problems. Also, the MS Windows platform support is not fully mature, and the GTK platform support is explicitly experimental. Fixing a critical bug is not considered a "user interface change" in the sense that there should be no way for it to interfere with you getting more work done. Mule doesn't work in newly released Windows XP 24 years

As far as I know there are no binaries configured with Mule provided for the platform on ftp.xemacs.org. Nor is there a "mule.el" file anywhere. The only thing I can guess that would produce that error is using a no-mule XEmacs, and any no-mule XEmacs should produce that warning if skk or lookup is insatlled under xemacs-packages. Please do M-: (featurep 'mule) RET to check for the Mule feature. I bet it returns nil. Also, please check whether the skk and lookup packages are installed under xemacs-packages in Win2000. The way to avoid this warning is to install those packages under mule-packages instead. If you are using locally built versions of Mule XEmacs, please check using M-x describe-installation that Mule was actually configured in. In principle: For *nix platforms and cross platform code (including the great majority of Lisp code), increasing stability. All accurate doc patches will be accepted. For code changes, it should be "obviously and provably safe" especially for platforms where the change provides no immediate benefit. You don't need to provide a proof, but if I have to do it, application will be delayed. Cf. GTK below for one way to prove safety. An alternative is that the patch have been in 21.5 for more or less time without reports of problems, but I don't like that very much. A lot of MS Windows code gets in that way. For experimental platforms (eg, GTK) and code, ie, code that is not autodetected and must be enabled with a configure option (eg, --with-modules), anything that a "responsible party" (Bill Perry for GTK, eg) recommends will probably go in, as long as it is guarded by #ifdef HAVE_GTK, is in a file that is only linked in builds for that platform, or the like. Provably safe for other platforms, and I don't actually care about stability of experimental platforms. Another example: Normally I'd consider Andy Begel "responsible" enough for the modules, but I couldn't swallow his remove-module patch because it violates the basic assumption that Lisp calls can't crash XEmacs. As both those examples indicate, "responsible persons" need not be review board members. MS Windows: I defer to Ben and Andy. The platform is de facto not stable, so I'm not going to try to enforce it any more. Judgements as to "overall stability-improving" on that platform are beyond my competence under current conditions. In general I would probably accept patches on the recommendation of any review board member who's been active in the Windows platform, since mostly they wouldn't push if there was some chance Ben or Andy wouldn't like it. The policy is pretty much the same for 21.1, except that it's Vin Shelton, 21.1 Release Manager, who has sole approval power there. (And it's probably relevant. Once 21.4 seems to be really stable, we plan to retire 21.1 and Vin will take over 21.4. I'll move on to planning the next major release.) For 21.5, basically any reviewer can approve any patch, subject to veto. A veto overrides any approvals. Vetos can be appealed but that's one of the functions of xemacs-review, it's not really a public process. Example at point: Darryl> XEmacs 21.4.4 still needs Xmu even with --with-xmu=no. Patch submissions, approvals/denials, and similar administrivia now all go to xemacs-patches. You may subscribe to that if you want to be sure to see the approvals etc. Or you can check the archives. xemacs-review is the policy channel, for people with patch approval power, policy votes, and/or final say over some part of the mainline. That's where we discuss personnel decisions, appeals of patch vetoes, and broad policy such as timing and major features in release plans, etc. So it's a closed list---most of those discussions are generally considered inappropriate for publication. But it's not appropriate if your contribution will be only in submitting patches, and discussing them when you have an interest. If you're willing to take on the responsibility of helping to ensure that all patches get reviewed, and policy-making, then xemacs-review membership is needed. XEmacs Review is a cabal in the sense that it chooses its own membership. The decision is primarily based on a history of past contribution and willingness to help process the patch queue or a few other policy- related admin positions (eg, Release Manager). Although you need to be a reviewer to have approval/veto power, *all* interested parties are always welcome to direct comments on patches (as to their importance and/or correctness) to *xemacs-beta*. Not *xemacs-patches*, which is basically the "for the record channel" for patchs and decisions, not for discussion.
