XEmacs/GTK 21.2 branch created... 23 years, 10 months

This morning I've created a new initial tag & a branch off of it for doing GTK work on the 21.2 code base. The new branch is called `gtk-xemacs-21-2', and a tag was laid down immediately beforehand called `gtk_xemacs_21_2_start' to ease in doing merges, etc. Nothing new is on that branch yet, but the wife and son are out for the next 5 hours, and there is a supply of coke laid in, the remains of my birthday cake, and XEmacs to sustain me until they return. I will be trying to get all of this checked in by feb 1st. If not, then probably before the 6th. Jen is leaving for florida to go scuba diving in the keys, so I won't have anything to do in the evenings after liam goes to bed. -Bill P.

Netinstall 23 years, 10 months

I plan on announcing the netinstaller next week when the new packages are released. This will fix the remaining mule warning. I have rejigged the ftp hierarchy so that it is: pub/xemacs/windows/ pub/xemacs/windows/setup.exe pub/xemacs/windows/setup.ini pub/xemacs/windows/packages -> ../packages pub/xemacs/windows/win32 -> ../binaries/win32 pub/xemacs/windows/cygwin32 -> ../binaries/cygwin32 This satisfies the need for a stand alone hierarchy without having windows stuff in the root. (NEW) XEmacs relies on a process called "dumping" to generate a working executable. Under MS-Windows this process effectively fixes the memory addresses of information in the executable. When XEmacs starts up it tries to reserve these memory addresses so that the dumping process can be reversed - putting the information back at the correct addresses. Unfortunately some .dlls (For instance the soundblaster driver) occupy memory addresses that can conflict with those needed by the dumped XEmacs executable. In this instance XEmacs will fail to start without any explanation. Note that this is extremely machine specific. 21.1.10 includes a fix for this that makes more intelligent guesses about which memory addresses will be free, and this should cure the problem for most people. Unfortunately, no binary is yet available for this version. Check back periodically at ＠uref{ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/binaries/}. 21.2 implements "portable dumping" which will eliminate the problem altogether. You might have better luck with the 21.2 beta binary, available at ＠uref{ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/beta/binaries/}.
