As an end-user of the Lisp, '-functions' makes sense to me. They are
different from '-hook' things, and I like that to be obvious.

pcl-cvs wants vc-workfile-version

In pcl-cvs version v2_9_9, when I save a file under CVS control, it
calls vc-workfile-version. However, I'm using vc-cc instead of vc,
and this function doesn't exist there.
One solution is to modify pcl-cvs.el so that it doesn't call
vc-workfile-version, a simple one-line change. However, if that's
done, pcl-cvs won't know the version of the file being changed and
cvs-mark-buffer-changed becomes a nop.
Instead, I stole the corresponding functions from vc and added them to
vc-cc. The following patch adds this functionality.

I get this as well (both in 21.1 and 21.2)
I did some digging but have to do some Real Work[TM] now. Here is how
far I got (all on 21.2):
putting a breakpoint at signal_malformed_list_error() gives far more
interesting backtraces.
The problem seems to be in Fapropos_internal() which calls
map_obarray. In our apropos_mapper() we happily accumulate the matches
in the closure by:
closure->accumulation = Fcons (symbol, closure->accumulation);
without ever protecting them from GC. Putting in some hacks to
protect them seems to solve the problem.
back in the old days (like 20.4) the closure used to be a lisp object
that was adequately protected. I couldn't find out who made the
change. The new code looks nicer and is probably faster...
Maybe the guilty party could speak up.... :-)

ediff 1.25 and pcl-cvs 1.46.
I had to look in the _pkg.el file to find out this, all commands under
Options|Manage Packages seem to crash now. "List and install" give
the backtrace below, "Update installed packages" is similar.
The only packages I've manually installed is xemacs-base-1.39 and
efs-1.19. I installed all packages (except "lookup" and "ssk" since
XEmacs without mule signal errors on startup when they are installed)
via ftp.sunet.se some week ago, so they should be reasonable uptodate.
