I had lots of problems with getaddrinfo before upgrading to RH 6.1 or 6.2
on my systems. But Emacs 21 worked fine - strange.

This fixes the majority of Ben's complaints I think and represents a
compromise between his and my views. I also fixed a bunch of cygwin
problems introduced by Ben and Kirill's patches. I also fixed the
irritating tab reordering when you click on a tab. Someone has broken
font-lock.el in the last few commits - I get virtually nothing highlighted
- so progress gauges only appear very briefly.
There is an oustanding GC bug with tree views currently, but since these
are not used currently I'm going to commit anyway. If anyone is interested
in the problem, eval glyphs-test.el and then do M-x garbage-collect. I have
no idea what is going on despite looking at it for a long time.

[PATCH] Binary encoding

Here's a copy of my encode-binary-* functions, for anyone
interested. The original reason for creating these was that
I wanted to remove the hackery from select-x.c, but they'll
probably prove more generally useful. I'm currently working
on the decode-binary-* functions, so *don't* send me e-mail
complaining that they don't work - I *know* that, because I
haven't implemented them yet.
I'm particularly interested in whether or not people on
strange platforms (with odd numbers of bits per character,
characters per int, etc...), or people using fancy coding
systems (e.g. chinese, japanese etc...) have any problems.
The encode-binary-string/encode-binary-stream functions
should be capable of encoding *any* data structure used
by *any* other programming language on any system you can
think of, as long as it doesn't involve pointers (I'm
still thinking about how to support these without allowing
lisp code to crash XEmacs - I have some ideas, but I will
leave these until I've finished the decode functions and
added delayed selection support to the mswindows code [and
written docs for all of these modifications]).

Problem updating xemacs-packages from CVS

I checked out the xemacs-packages tree from CVS then changed into the
xemacs-packages directory and did a cvs update, the update aborts as shown
below. Same operations yielded expected results on xemacs-21.1 and
xemacs-21.2 trees.
~/.cvsrc contains:
diff -u
checkout -P
update -Pd
per cvs.xemacs.org, but the same thing happened prior to putting this in
place (I thought it might be my problem).
What am I missing/doing wrong?
Also; -zN options seem to be broken for me (csh on Sun Solaris 2.5.1 and
2.6, gzip 1.2.4 (18 Aug 93)). Is this a known problem?
