Autoload Macros? 24 years, 10 months

Currently the xemacs package of vm contains in vm-autoloads.el: (autoload (quote vm-increment) "vm-macro" nil nil t) and vm-increment is a macro. Is this ok? I've encountered a situation where some vm files have been recompiled (without preloading vm-macro) and starting vm results in: Invalid function: (macro . #<compiled-function (&rest forms) "...(16)" [let ((vm-sbe-buffer (current-buffer))) unwind-protect progn forms (and (not (eq vm-sbe-buffer (current-buffer))) (buffer-name vm-sbe-buffer) (set-buffer vm-sbe-buffer))] 5>) Loading vm-macro...done Loading vm-macro... I was one of the people who said that rpath should not be used. The motivation was that rpath could point to NFS mounted stuff. When the NFS mounts change later the application takes a VERY long time to start. We all agreed this was seriously broken behaviour, and therefore rpath should NEVER be used by default. It is only safe to use in specific environments where the admin knows what's going on with his build environment and the stability of the paths.

Since the next version of flyspell doesn't have global-flyspell-mode anymore, I think we just let fall this problem. We have had how many incompatible versions of libc since glibc was supposed to Save The World(TM)? At least three by my count. Hardcoding rpath unconditionally is a lose. Period. I am about to install Red Hat 6.1 on a machine here so I'll take a look at what that environment looks like, but I doubt it will change any of my thinking.
