[PATCH] Handling LDAP binary values... 26 years

Some vaguely related comments: this variable seems to have a different default in GNU Emacs compared to XEmacs, and this seems like a bad idea to me. (It's even more "aggressive"--it's a longer list--in GNU Emacs.) Also, if I start up a vanilla XEmacs and do M-x customize-variable completion-ignored-extensions (or M-x customize-group minibuffer) why am I told [State]: this option has been changed outside the customize buffer. Packaging faqs? 26 years

I recently built an up-to-date XEmacs beta. The current packaging interface is nice, but there were a couple of points which should be addressed in the faq, and maybe improved for future releases. Here are two questions which came up for me (and therefore will come up lots of other people when 21.0 hits the streets). First suppose a user wants to know where some favorite lisp file is (e.g., where is crypt?). The best I could think of was to look in /usr/local/lib/xemacs-version/etc/package-index.LATEST.pgp to see which package provides crypt? Is there currently a better way? If not, maybe find-library should be taught to check the contents of package-index and display a helpful message. Now suppose that a user is unsure if he wants to get the package misc-games. The description "Other amusements and diversions" in the *Packages* buffer is not enough. How can the user find out exactly what the package 'provides? Again, looking at package-index.LATEST.pgp will do the job, but he is not likely to find that file on his own. Ideally, the more information command from the *Packages* buffer would provide the answer. Incidentally, displaying the info in the minibuffer does not work very well since it runs more than one frame width and the minibuffer does not resize for it. Let me know if I missed a better way for users to get answers to these two types of questions. In any case, I think the answers should be documented in the faq until better solutions can be implemented. As a final comment on the FAQ, I noticed that the entry on Infodoc is out of date. I find the default value of this variable particularly agressive and arbitrary. I think it should be reduced to the minimum, like binary files or so. Also, do we really still need loaddefs.el? I think there's an 80/20 rule here too - most of the world uses a small number of packages. Packages that then implement functionality outside this basic set can define their own logical button names (with default mappings to physical buttons), which would allow their users to remap them too. We could even provide functionality to ensure than a package that did this didn't overload the same physical button with two conflicting names. (require-unique-mouse-buttons 'select 'pan-universe) I'm sure there are many ramifications of this that I haven't thought of, but it feels cleaner than the current system. Regards Dave

Bug: Repeat Count for viper-mode takes only one digit 26 years

This bug report will be sent to the XEmacs Development Team, not to your local site managers!! Please write in English, because the XEmacs maintainers do not have translators to read other languages for them. In XEmacs 21.0 "Pyrenean" [Lucid] (i386-pc-win32) of Tue Jan 05 1999 on HERMES configured using `configure UNKNOWN' Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug and the precise symptoms of the bug: First of all I'm missing viper mode in this version. Don't laugh Xemacs in viper mode is the best Editor I've ever tested :-). I loaded the viper mode related .el files from gun emacs and compiled them. It works fine, exepting the fact that I'm only able to repeat commands 9 times maximum. In Vi you can repeat certain commands by first typing any number (can have multiple digits) and then perform the command. But Xemacs only takes the last digit. So if i wan't to go down 14 lines it goes down 4 lines. Since the lisp code works on gnu emacs and under Xemacs 20.4 on HPUX I think this is a problem of Xemacs 21. Or is it the reason that you don't provide viper any more? :-) Thank you for your very valuable work. Tudor, note that patches to XEmacs should normally be sent to <xemacs-patches(a)xemacs.org>. xemacs-beta is also OK for patches you don't want applied to the dist, but you want people to test and discuss.
