What is the problem? You points about building the packages from source are valid. However the current situation is already an improvement. It used to be that you could ONLY build ALL the packages from scratch. The clever preload stuff needed for that made it in impossible to build just a single package. Moreover you needed yo make your environment almost an exact copy of that of Steve's. These requirements no longer apply. If this has been achieved at the cost of only some fixable dependency problems in the from-scratch build that is a positive thing. Jan

I think it's rather annoying not to be able to build all of the packages from a clean source, with no other help than XEmacs itself. The problem is that building tm depends on being able to load the auto-autoloads from rmail, and vice-versa. As a result, bbdb can't be built, as this depends on the auto-autoloads from tm. IIRC, you also need the texinfo package already available beforehand, so that the info-files that makeinfo can't handle can be built. Maybe the texinfo package should be taken from where the packages are being built at the time. And (I probably repeat myself here) I think that no lisp from any packages should be necessary to build the XEmacs binary. I.e. all lisp needed to build should be included in the XEmacs-core sources.

XEmacs 21.2.10 on AIX 4.3.1 ??? 25 years, 9 months

Also, note that I had to add "#define USE_DL_STUBS 1" to src/s/aix4-2.h to make the linker happy about dlsym and dlopen. Error in text-modes package [was [comp.emacs.xemacs] exporting ...] 25 years, 9 months

I think there is an error in the package makefile for the text-modes package. If this is the case and is the cause of your problems then it should probably be removed for the 21.0 release. Please try commenting it out and see if that improves things. andy

I will admit that I just changed it, but I don't think that I broke anything. In fact, I made it do its work more often, rather than less. Please make sure that the whole buffer is visible ("All" in minibuffer). Please give a little more detail as to what you are doing when it is not working. When there is something about the current window that the function does not like, it silently does nothing. If you say that it is never working, I must say that I am at a loss, and I will try to reproduce it on my Linux box at home. -- Colin

File transfers not completing from gwyn.tux.org aka ftp.xemacs.org 25 years, 9 months

Dear Tux ftp admins, I am afraid I have been having some problems with your ftp server recently. The typical symptom is that a FTP transfer never finishes although all the data has arrived here. When I kill the ftp process and check the file, it is complete (I use it as part of the automatic XEmacs package installing process and there is a MD5 check included). Otherwise the response from the site is OK and transfers are swift so it seems not be a congestion problem. This used to occur (in the last weeks) about once every 3 transfers but now it is much more frequent. I also have heard from others much closer to you (network-wise) that they too have problems. Also at least one of the ftp.xemacs.org mirrors (sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch) has been become seriously out of date so I suspect they too have problems. An other interesting thing is that this happens with the Solaris 2.5.1 /bin/ftp and with netscape 4.0.x but wget and lynx seem to have no problems.
