How are you sucking in the messages? If you want to have raw data, you need to use the 'binary coding system... This should work exactly the same as in FSF Emacs[1]. If you are using insert-file-contents-literally then you need to be aware that is currently broken under XEmacs (as it was in FSF 20.3). My patch for fixing has not made it into a released version yet. However I though gnus already used its own version of insert-file-contents-literally? Invalid byte code: "variable reference to constant symbol :group" I thought I'd gotten that error originally from trying to loadd an fsf compiled w3 but have since used xemacs nifty package tools to get the latest and greatest of everything. Somehow that "other" w3 path is creeping in there, plainly visible with C-h v load-path <RET>. Working on that now. PS the hm-html package is not in evidence on ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/packages or at least the package tools didn't find it there. I do have it in the "sumo" download though so will try that one.
