I've rebytecompiled all the 21.0 XEmacs lisp packages and they are now
residing in ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/packages/.
The SUMO maintainer should download all the files there and create a
tarball to reupload. I am against making separate SUMO/no-mule and
SUMO/Mule packages since XEmacs can tell them apart.
Hmm. If I haven't fucked up, I should be able to create the tarball
from what I already have sitting in /tmp/staging ... Hold on.

Wrong. Our configure script does more than just configuring
defaults. Martin made a big deal trying to guess as good as possible what the
user wants, not only what the system's default is. For instance, I think you
would be surprised by the number of people not using the basic installation of
X11 provided by Sun, but having some /usr/X11R6/... path installed. So you
have two phylosophies: either you say "This is a Sun, we use Openwin", or you
say "this is a Sun, but the guy has installed /usr/X11R6, and this overrides
the default". I prefer the second approach.
There's indeed something broken in configure. The bug is that it
shouldn't detect headers and libraries from different directories. But using
/usr/X11[R6] if it exists, rather than /usr/openwin is not bogus at all to
me.
The problem with /usr/dt is a bit different (we had a thread on this
subject regarding the Motif libs). Appart from the fact that the name is
stupid, it's a problem of a particular package (CDE) providing it's own
version of a lib that can sometimes be found somewhere else.

Note that sumo.el will do that for you and take of care of minor
hassles like
1. vc-cc should not be included since it conflicts with vc.
2. make the tar file contains a lisp/xemacs/.. tree to go with the
binaries.
3. Make an empty lisp/xemacs/site-packages to advertise it.
4. Put Mule packkages in lisp/xemacs/mule-packages
However sumo.el works of package-get-base.el

How to get patches expedited

Recent patches have been very difficult to apply, so here's an updated
set of guidelines about how to create patches.
1. Patches should be submitted to xemacs-patches(a)xemacs.org for
review. If they go any place else, they run the risk of being
lost.
2. There should be a clear and concise description attached (separate
from the ChangeLog entry if that is necessary) as to why this
patch should be applied to XEmacs. We appreciate user
contributions to XEmacs, but XEmacs is precious. Please justify
why it needs to be changed.
3. Patches to XEmacs Lisp libraries are exempt from all rules in
this document, except rule X. Either check them in directly as
per the CVS guidelines posted separately, or send them on to
xemacs-patches if you don't have update access to the CVS tree,
and email jareth(a)xemacs.org for update access to packages which
you own.
4. All patches should have attached appropriate ChangeLog entries.
Patches without appropriate ChangeLog entries will be deferred.
5. ChangeLog entries should be divided into cut & pastable text as
per ChangeLog file. Patches to ChangeLog files Just Plain Don't
Work. File names should be rooted as appropriate to the ChangeLog
file being updated. Patches with all ChangeLog entries rooted to
the top-level directory will be deferred.
6. Patches to groups of files should be rooted somewhere
appropriate. Patches to anything in the XEmacs core should be
rooted at the top-level XEmacs source directory. Patches to
XEmacs lisp packages can be rooted anywhere so long as they can be
applied with a single patch -pX command.
It is not my intention to flame anyone in particular. CVS pretty much
guarentees that shitty patches are generated. If you model your
patches after the ones I post, Hrvoje Niksic posts, and Andy Piper
posts, you will be O.K.
If you feel anything in this posting is out of line, please let me
know.

Moreover it runs xmkmf to figure out where X. We have (or used to
have) our own private X in /usr/local/X11 and it picked it up
perfectly.
So if your xmkmf/imake install it is not broken all is well. The problem is
when to detect broken xmkmf/imake installs and then try to do the
right thing.

Sure, I can supplay -with-x(libraries|includes)=... that's not the
problem and I do not understand why this is related or similar to
/usr/dt.
/usr/openwin contains the X stuff from Sun bundeled with the OS. I
think this should be the default (and autoconf agrees). We manually
override this in configure.in (the comment there indicates autoconf
problems on Linux/HP-UX).
If a user wants to use his locally compiled X he should IMHO supply
the path to configure and I think that's how it worked in older
versions.

ediff. Michael has a new version out 2.70.2 since June that contains
my fixes to find its toolbar icons. Both that and our current version
need this patch badly to cope with what I think is a customize misfeature.
