menu entry always reads 'check in file <filename>' . This is quite irritating. i have a (load "vc") in my .emacs and no other vc related variables are set. tom

With vc.el it really is a problem. The current menu structure assumes it has most of the stuff in vc-hooks.el present to autodetect the state. I understand one of the reasons for the whole exercise was not to have all that stuff present? Or is it OK that as long a package is present it hooks itself in through the auto-loads file... [*] May be just a "VC" menu with an initial "load VC hooks" entry would be the best solution? Jan P.S I am partial to [*] because I want everything that can be enabled automatically to work without user intervention. However there current is not a mechanism to prevent a package from loading if it is present. (This would happen when the sysadmins have installed the vc package but the user hates it).

XEmacs 21.0-pre14 "Poitou"/XEmacs 21.2-beta2 "Aether" 26 years, 2 months

I've uploaded a formal release of new versions of both 21.0 and 21.2 to the ftp site. Don't use 21.2 unless you're 1) comfortable with packages, 2) have installed and run 21.0 for awhile, and 3) are developing or testing new features. 21.0 should be a bit closer to release than the previous release. The 21.0 tarballs are back in beta/xemacs-21.0 and are numbered as if they were beta57. The patches are against the aborted release from a few weeks ago. I'm still collecting changes for a package update from my overflowing inbox and I'll make a formal announcement of everything when it is ready. Enjoy ...

What is the right way? If your menu code is loading files, you've done something wrong. Look at how it is done in eudc: ;;;###autoload (if (and (string-match "XEmacs" emacs-version) (featurep 'menubar) (not (featurep 'eudc)) (not (featurep 'infodock))) (add-submenu '("Tools") '("Directory Search" ["Load Hotlist of Servers" eudc-load-eudc t] ["New Server" eudc-set-server t] ["---" nil nil] ["Query with Form" eudc-query-form t] ["Expand Inline Query" eudc-expand-inline t] ["---" nil nil] ["Get Email" eudc-get-email t] ["Get Phone" eudc-get-phone t]))) You need to ensure that menubars are compiled in and you are running in vanilla XEmacs (and not InfoDock).

What is the right autoload magic to add menus into the menubar for a package? I notice that VC and EDIFF are no longer adding menus by default, you have to ask for them in .emacs. Is that intended? Personally I think this is bad - this means only an expert who hacks her .emacs will ever use these packages. I'd like to add a sub menu for PCL CVS, but something like: ;;;###autoload(pcl-menu-install) gets run so early in startup that the "loading <foo.el> ..." messages get printed to stdout. What is the right way? greg

Drop the conditional, and wrap the `find-file' call with something like: (let ((buffer-file-coding-system 'binary)) (find-file filename)) Does that work a bit better?

If you actually want to be a beta tester, I would suggest downloading 21.0 first, since it is more stable, and needs as many people as possible to beat on it, so that it can be released soon. -- Colin
