In general, when you notice something strange, you should try to
reproduce it under `xemacs -vanilla' (no user file, no site file, no early
packages), then `xemacs -q' (no user file) to have an idea of where the
problem comes from.

Doesn't `xemacs -vanilla' beeps ? It beeps for me in all cases (X,

It's a feature. You can have several help buffers displayed at the
same time with different informations in them. This doesn't really create many
buffers since in XEmacs typing `q' in a Help buffer kills it by default
instead of just burry it.

While using `special-display-popup-frame' directly sounds a bit
obscure to me, I think that your quit function could be very usefull in many
other cases.

Packages must be installed in ${prefix}/lib/xemacs-packages and
/mule-packages for mule-only ones.

Problems building 21.2 "Aglaia" on Solaris 2.5.1 (missing -Rlibdir)

I'm finally back in circulation and ran into some problems with the latest
21.2 release on Solaris 2.5.1. On my system, configure is only adding
-Llibdir for the libraries in /usr/local and /usr/dt/lib, so can't find
any of these libraries when it tries to run and/or install.
I know we've had this discussion before, but is there any reason that it
adds the -R flag for the openwin libraries, but not for other library
directories that are specified/selected in the configure process? I've
hacked it into configure.in for now (probably in such a way that breaks
other systems), but wanted to make sure this was desired behaviour.

OK, I press `C-x C-f ~/work/srce/base.shar RET' expecting to get
fundamental-mode, since I don't have the package. But instead of
that, I get:

Maybe in the future I'll learn to like the automatic package update

Hi,
I am new to XEmacs (I have many years of fairly advanced Emacs
experience though), and I would like to try XEmacs 21.0. Please don't
tell me that since I am new, I should start with the stable version.
Whenever a new XEmacs version came out (from 19.16 on) I tried it. So I
tried 20.4 and I found that I liked Emacs 20.3 better. I really hope to
switch to 21.0.
So far I managed to get the sources by cvs and build bare XEmacs, no
packages. Immediately I have problems. I hope this is the right ml to
report them. `report-emacs-bug' seems to be undefined.
1. There are 2 (yep, two!) identical buffers, "*Warnings*" and
"*Warnings-Show*". Why?

To ensure normal operation, you should investigate the cause of the error
in your initialization file and remove it. Use the `-debug-init' option
to XEmacs to view a complete error backtrace.

I do not get any errors with --debug-init or with -q and then loading
.emacs by hand.
5. C-h p displays `nil' as one of the package groups.
6. There seems to be 2 parallel help/apropos facilities:
hyper-apropos/hyper-help and apropos-command/apropos/help.
Why not dump the latter as the least featureful?
Incidentally, it creates a lot of buffers (it doesn't reuse buffers
as it does in Emacs). I wrote a package, midnight.el, to
periodically clean up the buffer list (it is distributed with Emacs
20.3) Even if I will eventually decide agains switching,
you might consider including midnight.el with XEmacs.
Also, in Emacs 20.3 "*Help*" you can click on the name of the file in
which the function is defined and you are taken to the definition of
that function. Very neat.

Most of quit/exit functions in Emacs now use this function, and some
(like `dired-quit' and others like it) were replaced with
`quit-window'. I also tried to convince RMS that in all
"non-self-insert modes" (like help, dired etc) "q" should run
`quit-window' or something which calls `quit-window', while "z" or
"x" should run `kill-this-buffer' of something which calls
`kill-this-buffer'. He rejected the idea. Maybe I will be more
successful with you? :-)

pui-list-packages RET does nothing. What is the exact value of

Is this a feature? Compare the output from `b' in a dired buffer with
the output of a diff command in a xterm. dired diff seems to give the
current time in place of the files' mod time.

Actually it seemed ok with 1.37, modulo the fact that quitting ediff
didn't write out the merged version of the file. Will look into that.
