Allow me to guess: you run with zmacs-regions set to nil?
Because, if you don't, the current behaviour is far from logical.
Press C-SPC, then C-f a few times, then M-<. I bet 90% of XEmacs
users would expect the mark to remain at the point before C-f-ing.
(this is kinda hard to explain; the best way is try it and see if you
share my and Didier's annoyance.)
