21.4 Release postponed to March 15 23 years, 12 months

Due to personal circumstances, day job, and poor personal time management, I've badly missed the deadline for the last major status report (originally scheduled for February 15) before the 21.4 release. Since I won't get it finished for a day or so yet, this entails a delay in the release. My apologies for the delay. The new release target is March 15, 2001. As far as I know, there are no development problems warranting a delay. In the last couple of days, Martin Buchholz provided two patches and Matt Tucker a third that took care of the three showstoppers I know of offhand. However, my knowledge at the moment is not as complete and accurate as it should be. (Management holding up the developers ... sound familiar?) I need to put out a status report, and get the developers' responses, with some lead time before the release. Bill Perry is still committing stuff to the separate GTK branch. Pending a status report from him on the merge and my investigation of the build reports, I still hope to propose merging that code back to the release branch. ftp aux directory updated with latest links and tarballs 24 years

I've updated tarballs of openldap, Berkeley db, nas, libpng, bzip2, im, mew, and added a tarball for ncurses to ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/aux (the latest level of software). Here is the updated contents of the README at ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/aux: This directory contains programs that are not included in the XEmacs distribution, but which are either used by various packages that are in the distribution or are enhancements which can be compiled into XEmacs. Where available, ftp sites, web home pages, and configure flags (although you should never have to specify library configure flags since they are autodetected) are indicated below. Most of the files listed below contain the sources to these programs, and you will have to build them yourself. However, some binaries are available for the Win32 (i.e. native Windows 9x/NT), Cygwin and MinGW platforms. This file last updated 2001-02-14. Windows Binaries: ----------------- The win32/ directory contains binaries for patch, ssh, cvs, and common graphics libraries needed for building XEmacs. Note that most of these are self-extracting executables. Updated setup.ini for Windows net installer 24 years

I have updated setup.ini to reflect the latest released XEmacs packages. Mirror sites should be updated soon. This will fix problems people were having with packages not being found. A few people are having problems with the installer hanging during downloads. I do not know why this is - and the code is identical to the cygwin installer code, so something fishy is going on. I now have no time left to debug any of this for a few weeks. Thanks andy

XEmacs 21.1.13 for Windows and Cygwin 24 years

The XEmacs team are proud to announce the availability of a self installing binary kit of XEmacs 21.1.13 for Microsoft Windows, native and Cygwin 1.1.x The kit is located at ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/windows/setup.exe and all the usual mirrors. This release is different to other releases in that it is supplied through a `net' installer which will download and install the components you select over the internet. The installer is based on the cygwin installer. The release supports binaries for both native Windows (95, 98, NT & W2K) and for Cygwin 1.1.6 or greater as well as all the relevant XEmacs packages. Great idea, didn't work for me :-( Downloaded setup.exe (1.1.2.14) from mirror.ac.uk, took 'install from internet', 'direct connection' choices, got as far as the 'Downloading Packages mirrors.lst Connecting' step and nothing happened. Cancelled after several minutes, same thing. Any way I can help with more information? Running Win2K, Cygwin1.1.8, no problems with Cygwin setup in the past, and I checked just now and it got past the mirrors.lst step without problems. ht -- Henry S.
