auctex preview.dvi build failure

I don't know.  What I'm trying to build is from XEmacs CVS, clean export of 
the whole "packages" tree using the tag "sumo-2009-02-17".  
xemacs-packages/auctex/Makefile has "AUTHOR_VERSION = 11.84".

As noted above, the texinfo I'm using is 4.11.  But based on other discussion 
in this thread I suppose that's not the issue.
