[PATCH (pkgs)] Suppressions for macro error finder
17 years, 7 months
Jerry James
PATCH packages
This patch adds the ability to remove certain names from the list of
miscompiled macros generated by gen-macro-err.awk. Each line in the
file macro.suppress (in the top-level directory of the package tree)
should contain the name of one macro to NOT complain about. Stephen
Turnbull requested this feature so that we can strip out all the
read-event and set-buffer-multibyte complaints in the current report.
ChangeLog addition:
2007-05-22 Jerry James <james(a)xemacs.org>
* .cvsignore: Ignore macro.suppress as well as macro.list.
* find-macro-err.awk: Don't report names found in macro.suppress.
Also, update the FSF's address.

As David Kastrup said on xemacs-beta, using rawfile IS the right thing

[PATCH (pkgs)] Revert comint/shell changes
17 years, 7 months
Jerry James
PATCH packages
This patch reverts work over the last year on upgrading comint and
shell. I'll continue working privately to try to get the problems
ironed out. In the meantime, everyone else can use the previous
version.
Note that I patched several other files in packages with respect to
their comint interfaces. Those other patches are still correct as they
update to the version of comint to which this patch reverts.
Hmmmm... due to a proxy server, I have to generate the diff on a
different machine from the one where I send email. Is there some way to
get patcher to handle a preexisting diff?
python-modes/ChangeLog addition:
2007-05-09 Jerry James <james(a)xemacs.org>
* pydoc.el (pydoc-kill-async-output): Revert the previous change
as part of reverting comint/shell.
xemacs-base/ChangeLog addition:
2007-05-09 Jerry James <james(a)xemacs.org>

-;; Author: Peter Breton <pbreton(a)cs.umb.edu>
-
-;; This little add-on for comint is intended to make it easy to get
-;; output from currently active comint buffers into another buffer,
-;; or buffers, and then go back to using the comint shell.
-;;
-;; My particular use is SQL interpreters; I want to be able to execute a
-;; query using the process associated with a comint-buffer, and save that
-;; somewhere else. Because the process might have state (for example, it
-;; could be in an uncommitted transaction), just running starting a new
-;; process and having it execute the query and then finish, would not
-;; work. I'm sure there are other uses as well, although in many cases
-;; starting a new process is the simpler, and thus preferable, approach.
-;;
-;; The basic implementation is as follows: comint-redirect changes the
-;; preoutput filter functions (`comint-preoutput-filter-functions') to use
-;; its own filter. The filter puts the output into the designated buffer,
-;; or buffers, until it sees a regexp that tells it to stop (by default,
-;; this is the prompt for the interpreter, `comint-prompt-regexp'). When it
-;; sees the stop regexp, it restores the old filter functions, and runs
-;; `comint-redirect-hook'.
-;;
-;; Each comint buffer may only use one redirection at a time, but any number
-;; of different comint buffers may be simultaneously redirected.
-;;
-;; NOTE: It is EXTREMELY important that `comint-prompt-regexp' be set to the
-;; correct prompt for your interpreter, or that you supply a regexp that says
-;; when the redirection is finished. Otherwise, redirection will continue
-;; indefinitely. The code now does a sanity check to ensure that it can find
-;; a prompt in the comint buffer; however, it is still important to ensure that
-;; this prompt is set correctly.
-;;
-;; XXX: This doesn't work so well unless `comint-prompt-regexp' is set;
-;; perhaps it should prompt for a terminating string (with an
-;; appropriate magic default by examining what we think is the prompt)?
-;;
-;; Fixme: look for appropriate fields, rather than regexp, if
-;; `comint-use-prompt-regexp' is true.

-;;
-;; This is basically a fragile hack, although it's more accurate than
-;; the version in Emacs 18's shell.el. It has the following failings:
-;; 1. It doesn't know about the cdpath shell variable.
-;; 2. It cannot infallibly deal with command sequences, though it does well
-;; with these and with ignoring commands forked in another shell with ()s.
-;; 3. More generally, any complex command is going to throw it. Otherwise,
-;; you'd have to build an entire shell interpreter in Emacs Lisp. Failing
-;; that, there's no way to catch shell commands where cd's are buried
-;; inside conditional expressions, aliases, and so forth.
-;;
-;; The whole approach is a crock. Shell aliases mess it up. File sourcing
-;; messes it up. You run other processes under the shell; these each have
-;; separate working directories, and some have commands for manipulating
-;; their w.d.'s (e.g., the lcd command in ftp). Some of these programs have
-;; commands that do *not* affect the current w.d. at all, but look like they
-;; do (e.g., the cd command in ftp). In shells that allow you job
-;; control, you can switch between jobs, all having different w.d.'s. So
-;; simply saying %3 can shift your w.d..
-;;
-;; The solution is to relax, not stress out about it, and settle for

-;; that a half-assed solution is more in keeping with the spirit of Unix,

-;;
-;; One good hack not implemented here for users of programmable shells

Done; thanks for pointing that out, I don’t know how I missed that, and yay
automated testing.
I’ve also committed, without a ChangeLog entry, an update to that comment to
the effect that LATIN CAPITAL LETTER D WITH STROKE is not decomposable.

The character set associated with the Turkish language environment
is latin-iso8859-9, not latin-iso8859-5. Who thought up the Latin
5 vs. ISO 8859-9 distinction anyway?

Ah, indeed, just noticed the missing “not” :-) .

http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1173.html
There’s no available combining stroke in current Unicode; Đ maps to itself
in decomposed form, while š maps to U+0073 U+030C.
I can’t actually get the problem to reproduce itself outside the context of
that test. I imagine, though, that you’ve been seeing the test failure too,
unless your /tmp/ directory is on a UFS mount.

Another bit of awkwardness is that our mule-category.el design differs
slightly from that of GNU, and I don’t understand why enough right now to
abandon ours or to work out how to map GNU’s functionality to our
design. Ben, I imagine you don’t have at the front of your consciousness
right now, but if you’ve anything to comment on it, I’d love to hear it.
