can you please apply the attached patch to the xemacs 21.4.17 branch?
The 21.5 branch has a similar one already. Without it, gcc4 will produce
bad code:

This version of the patch doesn’t load latin-unity or Mule-UCS. In the event
of some utf-8 coding system not being available, it still falls back to
iso-2022-jp. I think this is reasonable, if not ideal; Hrvoje, if you think
it isn’t, approve the patch and add a warning yourself that latin-unity and
perhaps Mule-UCS should be loaded to make it behave more ideally.

errors founded here. This is response parsing problem. In some
circumstances we can request X server for data, while processing data.
This eventually lead to desyncronization. This is caused by
xwem-misc-xerr-hook, which can be called from inside `X-Dpy-send-read'
and xwem-misc-xerr-hook can also do `X-Dpy-send-read', now we restrict
`X-Dpy-send-read' reentering to avoid desyncronization. This is quite
rarely situation when `X-Dpy-send-read' reenters, but when it happens
xlib hangs forever.

XWEM is self-documented, dynamic, fullfeatured, ergonomic, extremely flexible
and customizable, emacs-like desktop environment build on top of (S)XEmacs.
This release fixes many bugs, including critical bugs which was causing hangs
and other nasty things. Also this release introduces many new addons, features,
minor modes, clarifies code making XWEM API easy to use, but remains highly
flexibility. If you want to change your point of view about desktops and ways
of using X and you are also ready to learn new things - we are highly encourage
you to try xwem.
Here a list of some changes/addons that has been made for 2.1 release:
* xwem-keytt - Fantastic idea and implementation by Vivek Ramachandran.
Minor mode that makes any X application be emacs-like. It is like
* xwem-vline - Minor mode to display vertical line in selected client.
* window ranking - Organize your windows stack as you want.
* clients maching - The most powerful and flexible clients matching
facilities among window managers. Some kind of regexp-like method to match
X windows.
* Modeline - At last, using gutters it was possible to implement modeline for
xwem minibuffer (the thing is that modeline is not available for
(minibuffer . only) frames.
* xwem-agent - Very simple intermediate layer between xwem and X. The idea
was generated by unnamed guy - alex-i (if you reading this, please name
yourself). He wanted more stability for xwem, and it was pity for him to
loose the desktop if (S)XEmacs crashes or xwem hangs, so we created
xwem-agent - wich holds X (i.e. acts as normal window manager act), but its
only purpose to restart (S)XEmacs if something bad happens. This trick
allowed to maintain already running X application while (S)XEmacs restarts
and xwem restores destop.
* Recursive keyboard macros on X level! - enhanced feature that jwz was
missing for years in XEmacs.
* Many many fixes and improvements.

Markus Kuhn has a widely implemented, several-year-old, stable, draft
standard for mapping X11 keysyms to Unicode code points, when those code
points don’t already have an associated X11 keysym. It’s available at
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/X11.keysyms.pdf .
The below gives XEmacs support for these keysyms. Although the spec says the
mapping should only happen for Unicode code points above #x100, XFree86,
proud torchbearers of the X11 tradition, have shipped thousands of desktops
with Latin-1 characters encoded using these keysyms. As such, we start check
the X11 keysym code range from what would correspond to U+00A0 upwards until
U+10FFFF.
