Yeah, I wish. _All_ of the instances (all two of them) in which I've
lost large quantities of data to XEmacs involved bad signed/unsigned

There have been a few scattered reports from Linux people with LessTif
of crashes immediately on execution. Suddenly, I got one. If most
Motif platforms build _and run_ OK, I'll release anyway, and warn that
Linux + Motif is bad juju, and try and get 21.4.10 out with a fix
ASAP.
If other platforms are hosed, too, we should try to fix it first.
If you can get a Motif build, and then run it and pop up an X frame
and do a little editing and maybe read some Info, that's good enough
for now. But I'd like to do that much testing before releasing.

will start it up tomorrow after sleeping (which i should really be
doing instead of buildding yet another version of XEmacs)
and let you know how it runs.
(thats about 9 versions of XEmacs i have installed here then)

I've got a RedHat Linux 7.2 machine (I'll get around to upgrading
someday:-), with lesstif-0.92.32-6. I built the release candidate. So
far it has NOT crashed. I've done some editing, repeatedly popped up
and dismissed various dialog boxes, etc., and no problem. Upon exiting
it says:
Warning: XtRemoveGrab asked to remove a widget not on the list
But that's the only problem so far. I am writing and sending this email
using the release candidate. A build report should be on the way
momentarily.

OK, with that and Rendhalver's report for OpenMotif on FreeBSD (if you
can't crash XEmacs running Gnus, it's OK ;-), I'm going to assume it's
something broken in the newer lesstif. I'll give it a day or so for
more reports to come in.

figure out why a couple of years ago and eventually concluded that
it must be a lesstif bug. But I still can't get rid of the nagging
suspiscion that I might be wrong.

Duh. RedHat's beta contains a 21.4.8 which is built with OpenMotif
widgets and dialogs. I've been running a modified version of their RPM
(21.4.9rc1) for some time now with no problems.
I'll build 21.4.9rc2 with OpenMotif as soon as I get my hands on it (the
ftp site seems to be still down) and try it out. I'll also notify the
RH folks about this, as soon as I have a mailing list archive link to
point to.
What's the recommended way to build an XEmacs on Linux with widgets? I
tried to build one some time ago with Lucid widgets, but IIRC just
didn't get widgets at all when doing that. Would athena be the way to
go?
Motif doesn't seem to be, and still it's used if autodetected, no matter
what --with-widgets and -dialogs one wants (also IIRC, and 21.4.9rc1).

Probably Qt, if you ask Bill Perry. }:^} Or GTK.
I use configure --with-dialogs=athena --with-widgets=athena
--with-athena=3d. I think Rendhalver substitutes --with-athena=next,
and on the other hand Steve Y adds --with-scrollbars=athena. I think
that's pretty vanilla.

No, if you specify --with-dialogs=athena, then you shouldn't get Motif
unless you specify it for something else.
I think the reason for preferring Motif is that (1) it's the preferred
toolkit on most commercial platforms, (2) flat Athena is godawful
ugly, and (3) autoconf is actually quite stupid about correlating
different features. You basically have to hardcode every possible
case. So the sensible thing to do is have a reasonable default and
make sure that there is some way for users to specify their own idea
of an optimal configuration (and get what they asked for!)
You could argue against (1) that a lot more people are using Linux
these days, but (a) they mostly use RPMs, and (b) those who don't are
very likely to have the choice to build and install their own version.

Ok, rc2 built on RH7.3 with openmotif-2.2.2-5 widgets and dialogs, in
use and no problems so far. build-report should be on its way too.
