 And yet the following

 (defface gnus-emphasis-bold-italic '((t (:bold t :italic t)))
   "Face used for displaying bold italic emphasized text (/*word*/)."
   :group 'gnus-article-emphasis) 
defface uses the font.el package, this may be the problem.
