I'm really trying to do this under Cygwin, but if someone has ideas concerning xterm, it might help too. I want zsh to change the title bar of the window it's in whenever it runs a command. ben

precmd () { echo -n \\033\]2\;$USER＠$HOST:$_\\07; } works for XTerm and PuTTY. -- I AM IN JAIL AND ALLOWED SEND ONLY ONE CABLE SINCE WAS ARRESTED WHILE MEASURING FIFTEEN FOOT WALL OUTSIDE PALACE AND HAVE JUST FINISHED COUNTING THIRTY EIGHT THOUSAND FIVE HUNDERED TWENTY TWO NAMES WHOS WHO IN MIDEAST.

Hmm, on closer examination preexec() is probably the function you want to change.

precmd () { echo -n \\033\]2\;$USER＠$HOST:$_\\07; } works for XTerm and PuTTY. -- I AM IN JAIL AND ALLOWED SEND ONLY ONE CABLE SINCE WAS ARRESTED WHILE MEASURING FIFTEEN FOOT WALL OUTSIDE PALACE AND HAVE JUST FINISHED COUNTING THIRTY EIGHT THOUSAND FIVE HUNDERED TWENTY TWO NAMES WHOS WHO IN MIDEAST.

I use zsh's precmd() and preexec() functions to do the job, like this: if [ x$WINDOW != x ]; then # Running under screen(1) precmd () { print -Pn "\e]0;%n＠%m:%l [W$WINDOW] [%?]\a" } preexec () { print -Pn "\e]0;%n＠%m:%l [W$WINDOW] [$1]\a" } else precmd () { print -Pn "\e]0;%n＠%m:%l [%?]\a" } preexec () { print -Pn "\e]0;%n＠%m:%l [$1]\a" } fi Hope this will help you -- lg

using print -P in zsh gives you access to the full prompt expansion variables listed in the zshmisc man page.

From http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/Xterm-Title.html#ss4.1 :

precmd () {print -Pn "\e]0;%n＠%m: %~\a"} The many other options to print are in zshbuiltins. If you don't need the prompt variables you can use: cmd /c "title %USER%＠%HOST%" in the cygwin window to set the title. -- René
