RedHat 5.1 has a rather large number of critical erratum rpms.
I'd suggest starting with the earlier dates and working your way to
the present. In particular, there's a separate folder for jpeg and
other graphics stuff. These all (almost all) need to be downloaded
and upgraded.
Yup, and so I did. Actually I'm not far from having a complete mirror
for ftp.redhat.com...
I also updated to gcc 2.8 and friends.
I'm too scared from my past experience to try that again. I had to turn
off optimization when I used gcc-2.8.1, because even a humble '-O' would
lead to a 'FATAL ERROR 6' on my AMD K5.
If the email had graphic attachments, that might explain why your
XEmacs went bang.
None of the messages in that thread ("Where do you want to go tomorrow?")
had any picture attachments - except for X-Faces. X-Faces were giving me
error messages because of some legacy (pre-20) X-Face configuration - I
removed the stuff from my config file and now I can see X-Faces again. 8)
