technique that may allow fixing the bug; it did allow fixing a similar bug
that Alan Mackenzie reported.
The problem has been seen in the package smoketest for some time.

Which gives me the opportunity to say that the package smoketest now
builds for 21.4, 21.5 (latest released) and 21.5 (bleeding edge)[1]
