I'm one of your users, too, and like Kyle I prefer the push-mark
behavior. Unlike Kyle, I am _not_ sophisticated in the use of the
mark ring (although I'm aware of its existence and very occasionally
use it) and do run (setq zmacs-regions t).
I did notice this most excellent :-) feature, many years ago, and I
liked it as soon as I realized what it was doing.
I just happen to value the convenience of having those functions
change the mark so that I don't have to remember to do so, more than
the inconvenience of having to organize my thoughts about the mark so
that I don't make (what are as far as I can see) irrelevant cursor
movements after setting mark. True, this can cause data loss.
Nothing that C-y or M-x undo won't solve, and it's very rare in my
experience---thus, my preference. Your [Hrvoje, et al] Mileage Varies
