Back to XEmacs Beta, I'd like input from the SuSE guys, too.
It's funny that it's only you big-name distro developers who are
reporting this. Did you get a bug report which you're forwarding, or
is this basically your own experience?

The fonts.conf you sent me is very different from what I get from
Debian "sid". Then there's this:
<match target="font">
<test name="family" compare="eq">
<string>Kochi Mincho</string>
</test>
<edit name="hinting" mode="assign">
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
<!-- the rh_prefer_bitmaps options (a nonstandard
Red Hat extension), controls whether embedded
bitmaps, when available are preferred
to antialiased rendering. For Japanese,
we prefer antialiased rendering -->
<edit name="rh_prefer_bitmaps" mode="assign">
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
</match>
I wonder if XEmacs is somehow getting confused about something because
of Red Hat extensions. Mike (Fabian), does SuSE do customization of
fonts.conf and/or fonts/fontconfig like this?
Probably not the issue, but I'm glad I found out that we're not using
close to the same config files!
