How can I check the status of the lazy-lock mode?
How do I set/prevent it?

 that it attempts to fontify hangs indefinitely with the progress
 slider indicating around 5% done (I typically notice it in VHDL mode

 state, the progress slider and "stop" button are flashing like mad.
 Somewhere between 10-20 clicks in the progress window seems to
 walk it out of the hang condition (progress bar moves slightly
 with each click).  When it finally goes away, the buffer is
 properly fontified. 
Do you have lazy-lock turned on ? Does turning off lazy-lock mode help ?
