Thank you for finally given a reason why they decided over here to
make the thesis defences "invitation only".

P.S. I think it is very rare for people to fail their defense here.
However apparently it does occur sometimes that somebody "accepted on
the condition that <3 months works of changes> is applied". Given that
my advisor is reluctant to fix a date until he is sure of the final
version I presume that won't happen for me.
