What version of makeinfo do you have installed? The _oldest_ makeinfo
you can use is:
$ makeinfo --version
makeinfo (GNU texinfo 3.12) 1.68
$ makeinfo --version
makeinfo (GNU texinfo) 3.12c
The messages seems to be right because of "A period or comma *must*
follow the closing brace of an `@xref'. It is required to terminate
the cross reference." [texinfo.info, node "Reference syntax"]. So I'm
wondering nobody else has detected this error.
