Linux, Suse 7.3,
x86, plain configure --prefix=/usr/local/somewhere .. make .. make install,
built with gcc 3.0.4
On the other hand it built successfully. I can dig a little more if you

This looks like the "let's use the unreleased incompletely documented
`Hannibal Lecter' version of ld in a public release" SuSE/RedHat bug.
See if adding "--ldflags='-z nocombreloc'" to the configure line gets
you an XEmacs that at least can post a frame without crashing on X.
