Requiring GNU make just to build the packages is evil. :)
We currently require GNU make to build Lisp packages from source. As
far as I am concerned, it will always be a requirement unless someone
comes up with something better.
I am less convinced than ever that we wish to use configure on my
end. configure is inherently flawed with respect to building things
for other systems. It tightly binds dependencies that should never
escape into a distribution. If you can demonstrate otherwise, lead me.
