I tried this with my Linux 21.4 and 21.5 builds, and I didn't get an
infloop in either case. Can you tell us more about the XEmacs where you
observed this?

infloop in either case. Can you tell us more about the XEmacs where you
observed this?
FWIW, I cannot reproduce the infloop on either 21.4 or 21.5 under
Solaris.

Hm, you're now the third person to tell me that they can't reproduce
the problem. It's gotta be something to do with my settings...
If I try to reproduce the bug in 'xemacs -vanilla', I can't. :-( But,
if I kill the buffer and then re-visit the file, I get:
(1) (local-variables/warning) File local-variables error: Local
variables entry is missing the prefix
So there _is_ a problem, just not the exact one that I reported. :-P
I'll dig through my settings and let you guys know what was triggering
the problem.

In this case, the problem is that you used the string "Local
Variables:" *twice* near the end of the buffer. In your example:
;; and a Local Variables: example
If my edebug-assisted analysis is correct, the code is fooled by that
line and sets PREFIX to ";; and a ". Since the following line does
not begin with that ";; and a", a warning is printed. I'm not really
sure if that should be considered a bug.
I'm curious as to what causes your infloop.

Yes, your analysis is correct. A possible solution (and I'm not sure
whether or not it would be worth while "fixing") could be...
Provide a way to escape the string "Local Variables:" so it is possible
to refer to it in comments or doc strings.

I found the problem. It was Latin-Unity induced.
Heads Up Mr Turnbull! There is a patch on its way to xemacs-patches
that fixes the problem.
