What annoys me most are the frequent crashes on x86_64 platforms. At
least once a day for me. Unfortunately, I cannot find a procedure to
reproduce these crashes.
The second most annoying thing is that often the memory
consumption goes up without any apparent reason. Right
now the xemacs I am using to type this mail uses more than
a gigabyte memory:

Hmmm.... I'm using XEmacs on an x86_64 platform every day at work, and I've
had no crashes for a long time. Can you show us your compilation options?
Have you applied any patches to the source tree? Do you have a stacktrace
we can diagnose?

Have you posted a bug to the tracker (searching on creator=mfabian +
module='core code 21.5' gives nothing, searching on module="code code
21.5" + "all text"="crash" gives 68, 149, 317, and 220, none of
which
look familiar)? Please make sure that there's a backtrace with the
bug. A cross-ref to the Novell/SuSE tracker would be acceptable (just
write out an URL in the Comment field).

Known issue, cause unknown, except it's presumably in GC. When you
discuss memory issues, please CC Marcus Crestani
<crestani(a)xemacs.org>, GC is his baby, but he only seems to
intermittently pay attention to the list. You could also create a bug
for it and assign it to him. Then he will get pinged any time someone
adds to it.
Some people have run under malloc debuggers, but that's really painful
:-(. Detecting a slow leak that way is probably not really feasible.

I had a crash again today with about the same backtrace as the
one I reported in

The default sorting first displays issues that don't have a priority
set. Since #359 has priority set to "normal", it shows up a couple
pages later with all the other normal priority issues.

Since I reported in the xemacs tracker, I had many more such
crashes. The backtrace is always the same.

backtraces this seems to be related to the garbage collector.

foolishly loaded all of the fonts that I have on my system right away.
But, if you accumulate enough fonts over time, then the same problem
might occur. I guess this is not really all that helpful because the
"solution" on Solaris isn't known either.

But, if you accumulate enough fonts over time, then the same problem
might occur. I guess this is not really all that helpful because the

I ask because I would like to try whether I can reproduce it.
Currently I don’t know how to reproduce the increasing memory
consumption. It just “happens sometimes” if I am using XEmacs for a long
time.

I did read your post in the archive but it didn’t seem to apply to me.
On my linux system there is a /usr/share/fonts directory with several
sub-directories which all together contain a huge amount of fonts:
mfabian＠magellan:~$ fc-list : file | wc
3413 3683 138337
mfabian＠magellan:~$
I.e. I have 3413 font files installed. The /usr/share/fonts/truetype
directory alone contains 909 font files:
mfabian＠magellan:~$ fc-list : file | grep usr/share/fonts/truetype | wc
909 912 38611
mfabian＠magellan:~$
Nevertheless, XEmacs doesn’t consume huge amounts of memory while
starting but only much later when I am already using if for many hours
or even days.
However, xft xemacs was pretty unstable for me, so it could have
been
something else. Lots of crashes.
I have lots of crashes as well but all of them seem to be in the new
garbage collector, always the same backtrace:
