I plan to commit this and the companion patch disabling use of Canna
with MC_ALLOC about Wednesday or so, unless somebody objects.
I've finally finished a draft of a module version of Canna support.
Canna is an input method for Japanese, and (especially for distros) I
think it's unfortunate to depend on and pull in that package for
people who aren't gonna need it. This remedies that; with this
version, a distro can build a binary which can load the module that
actually links to cannalib at runtime, thus avoiding both a dependency
on the canna package for non-Japanese-speaking users and a separate
binary for Canna users. (I plan to do the same for Wnn in the near
future.)
My compliments to the authors of the module support, it was actually
fairly easy; the hard parts are in figuring out how to let the user
down gently if Canna isn't available as a module or built in.
Jerry, any time you can spare to look this over would be useful; the
more I know, the more questions I can answer without bugging you. So
tell me what I got wrong. ;-)
Unfortunately, Canna-as-a-module conflicts with MC_ALLOC, and I can't
figure out why. My Linux box went up in a puff of smoke, and my Mac's
gdb doesn't seem to be able to catch the crash; it tells me that the
program doesn't exist when I try to get a backtrace. I eyeballed the
code, but the usual suspect (missing lcrecord->lrecord translations)
wasn't found. It is hitting the assert in mc-alloc.c, l. 567 in
get_page_header():

Marcus, any help you can give here as to what to look for? I'll be
working on getting a backtrace, but it may take some time. No, I
can't set a breakpoint there, either, as the Mac's gdb doesn't handle
keyboard interrupt correctly. Sorry. I would not assume that the bug
is in MC_ALLOC, the Canna code is over ten years old.
The buggy version can be checked out from CVS with -r canna-mc-alloc-crash.
Although this tag is on the sjt-xft branch, you can build a very close
facsimile of current CVS simply by configuring --with-xft=none.
To replicate the crash, I start XEmacs on an X display with "xemacs
-vanilla", invoke M-x toggle-input-method RET japanese-canna RET, and
that's all she wrote.

By default this version will configure both MC_ALLOC and HAVE_CANNA if
the Canna libraries are available.
Once I've tagged this version, I will immediate commit a patch (to
sjt-xft branch, I'll be waiting for discussion for the mainline) to
arrange that you can't configure Canna without explicitly disabling
MC_ALLOC. I think that makes this at worst a PG-13 feature. :-)
