I've always wanted to fix this. Anybody know of reasons why not?

When at the end of an 80-character line in an 80-column window, where
do you paint a block cursor?
I wonder how much CPython development takes place on actual physical
80-column terminals. On anything else you just resize the window to
show 81 columns.

Good question, thanks! I can think of at least three different ways to
handle this, though:
1. Don't paint a block cursor, do something else.
2. Always scroll the line to the left as in truncate-lines mode.
3. Treat it the same way as you would actually inserting a space
there (ie, left-scroll in truncate-lines mode, wrap otherwise).
I wonder how much CPython development takes place on actual physical
80-column terminals. On anything else you just resize the window to
show 81 columns.
I don't wonder about such things. The user is almost always right
about the needs he perceives. How the developer interprets those
needs in a software solution is different matter, of course.

This has always bugged me as well.
When at the end of an 80-character line in an 80-column window,

I always set
(set-specifier left-margin-width 1)
(set-specifier right-margin-width 1)
in my init file. This isn't enough room to paint a block cursor (which
is 10 pixels wide in my setup.) But the right and left margin widths
could be automatically adjusted depending on the cursor width,leaving
room to paint the block cursor.
How do other editors handle this situation?

Back in the day I seem to remember something about some terminals (this was
before the widespread availability of computers with window systems) not
being able to handle display in the last column. We're spoiled today.
Almost all terminal emulators support a VT100-like command set and use
fairly mature, pretty much bug-free code. That wasn't always the case.
Take a look at your termcap file or terminfo database sometime. (I see
nearly 2500 compiled terminfo descriptions on my Mac.) When was the last
time you used an ADM-5, an AMPEX 219 or an HP 2621a? There are probably
descriptions of terminals in there that went out of production 35 years ago.
Some of those terminals were bound to have bugs in their 80th column display
handling.
