Folks,
I must apologize for the confusion I caused with
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-beta/199909/msg00354.html and
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-beta/200002/msg00020.html. While
installing the "AIX Toolbox for Linux" and KDE2 on my RS/6000 lately, I
found out that this darn thing was running with 8 bit color depth by
default all the time! (I almost couldn't believe it.) If I had read the
output of "xdpyinfo" more carefully at the time when I posted the
aforementioned messages, I would also have seen that it said "depth of
root window: 8 planes" ...
After forcing X to use 24 bit with the "-d 24" option, XEmacs' desktop
icon looks fine again! Maybe I was confused because 21.1 never showed
that problem; the icon was ok even with 8 bit color depth. But as Jan
Vroonhof mentioned back in Feb. 2000, this change apparently has
happened between 21.2.11 and 21.2.12
(
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-patches/199902/msg00036.html).
So, sorry again; I thought I had to set this right, although it's
something I'm very proud of ... :-/
Markus
