New users with "Windows background" (and that's the majority of users
now) will certainly (IMHO :) expect the yank/kill operations to
interact with clipboard.

As to being the default, hmm. I think that the primary selection and the
kill ring are logically separate things, so I don't expect the two to
interact.
I don't know what would be best for new users though. I don't think it
will be what most people expect. On that basis I would say turn it off
by default.
In the end, though, I just don't really mind much (as long as I can set
my own preference :)
