See
C-h v progress-feedback-use-echo-area
for a workaround.
While on the same topic, I think something is wrong with the latest update
the packages, as I could reproduce a related problem under both XEmacs 21.4
and 21.5.
Basically XEmacs would start and get into an infinite loop trying to
fontify *scratch*. When I do a C-g, I could get out. But then *EVERY*
execute-extended-command would result in a 2 second pause with an error
message "font-lock ....xxxxx wrong array marker-p nil" or some such. It was
supremely difficult to even type as this message kept reappearing in a
non-stop fashion.
Since I didn't have enough time, I just reverted to a older version of the
xemacs-sumo.tar.bz2 and the problem went away. Maybe it is a known problem
which has been fixed by now. Just wanted to mention it to see if anyone
else has seen it.
