The default color was modeline background. Since default and modeline backgound are the same shade of gray, dividers were invisible. This is even worse than black lines, becuase they are supposed to give visual cues as to where to grab and drag. I think the ideal solution would be to make them 3-D, as this will give an association with draggable modeline, like "I can drag stretched 3d object accross their stretch direction". A 3-D object can also never mimic on the screen. There might be a separate face for dividers, supplying a color, but I hope that someone might make 3D dividers.
