I am giving a talk about XEmacs at the Silicon Valley Linux Users' Group
on Wednesday July 1 at 7pm. This speech will be 30 minutes or so in
length, with a 10 minute question and answer period. Mitch Wyle will
also be speaking at the same meeting on vim, which is a version of vi.
I will be addressing such topics as:
-What is XEmacs, what is its relation to GNU Emacs, the Free Software
Foundation, X Windows, Lucid Emacs, etc.?
-How does one get more information about XEmacs?
-How does XEmacs compare to vi, to IDE editors and to GNU Emacs?
-What does XEmacs look like under the hood?
-What is Lisp and why is it used as an extension language?
-What is the history of XEmacs?
-Why is there a split between XEmacs and GNU Emacs?
-What attempts have been made to merge the two editors?
-How does the XEmacs development process work?
-What are the new features in the soon-to-be-released version 21 and in
the following releases?
The meeting will last until around 9pm and is located at the Gateway
Conference Center, Building J, Cisco Systems. The address is 255 West
Tasman Drive, San Jose, CA 95134. For detailed directions see the
