There doesn't seem to be an xaw-dev package, only an xaw3dg-dev
package. If you don't have xaw3dg-dev installed, you could try
installing that. If you do, you could try uninstalling that.
I don't have it; I'll now try to install it and return the 3D stuff to
ld.so.conf.
I don't recommend uninstalling either xaw3dg itself or the
xaw-wrappers package; I suspect that a lot of Debian's stock X stuff
is linked against xaw, and presumably xaw3d. Some of it might give
you the same headache in reverse.
I don't think that would be a problem; I've removed the 3D stuff from
ld.so.conf, and everything still worked. But maybe I didn't try the
right things.

Does _ThreeDP_h get defined by the athena 3d headers? If not what happens
if you build lwlib with it defined?

You can also use `LD_PRELOAD=/usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.so xemacs'; this is
apparently what the xaw-wrappers scripts do.

I tried this, and I got lots of
xlwradio.c: In function `DrawDiamond':
xlwradio.c:547: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type
Debian installs both the original Athena headers (in
/usr/X11R6/include/Xaw) and the Athena3D headers (in
/usr/X11R6/include/Xaw3d). I tried mv'ing Xaw and symlinking Xaw3d in
there; no go. Evidently you need to include some private headers. To
get at them in Debian Linux, at least, you will presumably need to
check for them being in /usr/X11R6/include/Xaw3d. Sigh.

Well, if you manage to figure it out I would be grateful. The widgets
supposedly have Xaw3d support in them if you have the Xaw3d headers and
libraries. So if anyone gets a succesful build please let me know.

Only by the private headers; #include'ing a public header won't leave
any clues that you're using Xaw3d.

Yes.
The Xaw3d simple (non-composite) widget classes all derive from either
ThreeD or SmeThreeD. Those that derive from ThreeD will have
_ThreeDP_h defined, whle those deriving from SmeThreeD (i.e. menu
items) will have _XawSmeThreeDP_h defined.
The composite classes appear to be unchanged from the original
versions.
