Any recommendations?
This is basic sysadmin 101, and I'm not sure we really need to say
anything (in a manual/document). The obvious things are:
* With the possible exception of "movemail", the appropriate owner/group
is highly site-dependent, and is defined by local site policies.
Personally, I happen to use "bin/bin", although many sites do not like
to use these.
* Depending on the OS, "movemail" may need special permissions, which
are, of course, OS-dependent. For example, under HP-UX, the owner is
irrelevant, but the group must be "mail", and movemail must be
setgid. Other operating systems have other, different requirements.
* File permissions: "chmod 444"" are good, with "555" for
executables.
* Directory permissions: 555, generally. The only possible
exception is "777" (not 555) for the lock directory, if you happen to
have one (newer versions of XEmacs appear to have eliminated the lock
dir). However, local site policies may disallow a publicly writable
lock directory.
