Here's a clue: I'm running without a toolbar. Now, the various xxx_toolbar_pixel fields in Emacs frames are no longer getting initialized (which is what the 0xffffffff is), which they are in 21.4. Specifically, x_frame_properties fails because it tries to pass these to XQueryColor via color_to_string.
