In order to turn this into an official package release, I urgently
need your help in testing it. I've tested EFS on a number of servers,
I tried it with XEmacs 21.4.3 on Win2k (and NT), but I wasn't entirely successful.
It did work better than the one included in 21.4.3, because that one locked up at once
and didn't work at all for me. The new one could list a directory in dired
With the new EFS I tried to upload a bunch of files by marking them in dired and
pressing 'C'. No response and nothing copied. The end of the ftp buffer implied
problems with back-slashes:
delete /html/behag/#anmlan.htm#

put c:\myweb\behag\anmlan.htm /html/behag/anmlan.htm
/usr/bin/ftp: local: c:mywebbehaganmlan.htm: No such file or directory
Also, there seems to be a lot of trouble down in the process filter. Could be
the same kind of thing, or it could be my settings.
For example, copying a remote file to 'c:\myweb\tmp.tmp':
(1) (error/warning) Error in process filter: (file-error Opening directory Resource
temporarily unavailable c:\myweb\tmp.tmp)

Since this is getting pretty ugly, an alternative is to stick with
telling users to customise efs-ftp-program-name to point to the version
of ftp.exe that ships with Windows.
Can XEmacs elisp access Windows environment variables? If so, this should
always be available at %SystemRoot%\system32\ftp.exe, at least on NT/2000
boxes.

I have a vague worry that using windows ftp.exe will be swapping
one set of problems for another...

We shouldn't assume that users have cygwin's ftp.exe installed, so we
ought to solve both cases (or insist that all users use Windows'
ftp.exe).
Michael, efs package 1.25 introduces a new error relative to 1.22 when
used with the Windows' ftp program on Windows 98. Eg on login:

efs is not waiting for the "ls" to complete before moving on to "quote
site idle", and is therefore getting very confused. I haven't figured
what's going wrong yet.
