does this only happen in XEmacs 21.4.4?
Does it also happen when you start XEmacs as follows?
xemacs -vanilla
If not, then you have to check your init files (~/.emacs,
~/.xemacs/init.el, ~/.xemacs/custom.el, site-start.el) for the reason.
Do you have an older XEmacs, or even GNU Emacs, that you could try
this in?
Does this happen in shell windows too?
Does it happen in vi, if you ever use that one?
