I have synced the XEmacs jde package to jde 2.2.9beta12. I only include here
the patch I had to apply to the vanilla kit for XEmacs. I think the Changes
are legitimate so I would be grateful if they could be applied to the JDE
repository also.

Probably
OTOH, they haven't ever been there, in case CVS is correct, so maybe
it's not that lethal to omit them.
By the way, I've given the new package somewhat testing now, and it
seems to work nicely. I haven't tried out any new features yet,
though. Thanks...

Here's another example of "well-that-other-package-does-it-that-way-so-

Go looking through the package Makefiles and pretty soon you'll come
across 'MANUAL = xxx'. Um, I hate to tell you this, but that isn't
used *ANYWHERE*.

in this way. A bunch of these files should *never* be referenced from

I think we'll need C# support modes sometime, but a brief look a couple
of months ago to CSDE convinced me that it's not the one, at least in
its current state. The development isn't too active and to me it looked
like a pretty ugly and incompletely modified version of JDE.
There's already something for cc-mode at the cc-mode contribs page [1],
that looks more promising to me.
I don't do C# so I'm not the best one to comment about these modes. If
someone does and wants to see C# support in XEmacs, recommendations
welcome.

i think we need to put them all into a c mode somewhere near us
if anyone wants to help me work out the best c# mode to include i will
be putting them in packages/unsupported/rendhalver soon
i will also put the pike and IDL modes there too so patches will be
appreciated then we can include this stuff in cc-mode :)
the IDL mode will be useful for all those ORBit programmers out there
and im not sure if we have a pike mode yet ??

We don't "need" any junk code. It's good to set it up as packages,
but if it's not ready for prime time, we shouldn't put too much effort
into maintaining it. I'd like to see us get in touch with the
authors, see if they're willing to maintain their code as XEmacs
packages. Give them commit privileges as appropriate. Offer them
bug-reporting addresses (somebody remind me to update aliases-xemacs
at tux...).
What we (XEmacs) should do is document these packages in some place
users will see it. Evaluate them, at least to the extent of saying
whether they look like they'll make it out of contrib before we
release 22.0. :-)

Make a separate package, only put it in cc-mode when the cc-mode
people say it's OK. In general separate packages for separate
maintainers or separate functionality is a good thing. This is
especially important with packages that are actively maintained
upstream.

Be sure to use the latest cc-mode (5.30) from CVS when working with
this, and be in contact with Martin Stjernholm in order to avoid
duplicating the work with C#, IDL and Pike. We've exchanged a couple of
mails with Martin regarding javascript-mode and cc-mode, and I've
concluded that it will be good to wait until the next cc-mode is out
before changing too much stuff related to it.
Martin, could you post some recommendations how to proceed with this?
if anyone wants to help me work out the best c# mode to include i will
be putting them in packages/unsupported/rendhalver soon

Hohum, that doesn't sound good, considering that the contributed C#
adaption turned out to be little more than a renamed C mode. According
to a C# user (I'm not), there are several C# constructs that it
doesn't handle.
Be sure to use the latest cc-mode (5.30) from CVS when working with
this, and be in contact with Martin Stjernholm in order to avoid
duplicating the work with C#, IDL and Pike. We've exchanged a couple of
mails with Martin regarding javascript-mode and cc-mode, and I've
concluded that it will be good to wait until the next cc-mode is out
before changing too much stuff related to it.
Martin, could you post some recommendations how to proceed with this?
Well, I can say that it's at the top on my TODO list after the next
release. But it'd be very nice if someone with more C# knowledge would
contribute to it, since I don't have any experience at all with that
language.

hmmm not sure if i know anyone but i will ask around and see if i can
come up with someone to help out, i have a friend who is a C/C++ god
and he will be living with me soon so i may rope him in to help out
with this

Its not my code. Isn't it just lisp's way of "modularizing" code? If
you
want code in multiple files how else should you do this? The provides are so
that jde can conveniently do requires.
I'm not going to mess with the code, if you seriously believe that all of
the provides should be in the package-info - even though requiring anything
other than jde outside of jde will probably break - I will change it.
Although it still seems wrong to me.

It's a matter of taste; I lean to the "let the caller choose" way of
thinking.
Inside of a package you can just load the library, since you _know_ it
will be there. This is just as easy: (load "jde-foo") vs (require
'jde-foo).
A require is more a user-level (including other packages) feature;
something where you _don't_ know if the facility is present on the
system.
An intermediate case is where you have a driver library that
optionally loads several modules which in turn require (in common)
certain modules. But in this case you had better be providing a
consistent API, or you'll drive yourself crazy. And if so, and it's a
little bit general, why not publish the API?

This is the responsibility of the requiring code, not ours.
The main consideration, though, is that right now the only convenient
introspection into the package system dependencies that we have is the
REQUIRES and PROVIDES variables in package Makefiles.

I think you _should_ get a warning. However, if you really want to
turn it off, put
(byte-compiler-options (warnings (- unresolved)))
at the top of the library. (`byte-compiler-options' is a macro, and
has a definitive docstring.) In 21.5 it's possible to do this kind of
thing on a very fine-grained basis (thanks (?) to Ben), but I haven't
messed with that so I can't even tell you what the API is.

library is available?

FWIW, GNU Emacs' `require' has had an optional third arg NO-ERROR
since 1998-11-02. If the arg is non-nil, `require' returns nil if the
file is not found instead of signaling an error.
