Faces such as zmacs-region and highlight aren't set to a default value. Default values aren't set in XEmacs 21.5.3 beta either. I have an ancient gtk-xemacs from Bill Perry's site that does set zmacs-region and highlight faces (it identifies itself as XEmacs 21.1 (patch 12) "GTK" [Lucid] (i686-pc-linux) of Mon Nov 12 2001 on bundalo).
