I'm probably the dumbest idiot on earth: I switched to MULE as my
default environment a couple of weeks ago. This was working fine
until I updated to CVS head today. I was using the following to use
Latin-1 as a default for everything that doesn't have another default
already:

(Is this even remotely the right thing to do? It did work for a
while.)
When I run this now, my XEmacs dies a horrible death very quickly

Aren't you supposed to use something like:
(set-language-environment "Latin-1")
or even:
(set-language-environment "German")
I use a variant of that for Croatian, with good success.
(Of course, this might be of no relevance to your crash; I was just
commenting on "proper" Mule usage.)

You shouldn't. I don't know why you're getting Big5. Does the same
happen with xemacs -q and/or xemacs -vanilla, once you evaluate the
set-language-environment directive?

Are you sure you're not looking at a Windows-1252 file rather than a
Latin-1 file? Latin-1 doesn't have directed quotes and the like, but
lots of broken apps identify Windows-1252 as ISO 8859/1 anyway.

I think it ought to work, although the set-language-environment UI is
preferable. However, iso-8859-1 is a special case, and behaves
weirdly in many ways.

Yeah, somehow you've managed to get the lstreams into a cycle. Don't
do that. :-P I think Ben is the only person who can untangle this in
realtime, though.
