I just made my first pass at building 21.5 on Cygwin. So far, I've found a
(minor) problem with the build and a runtime problem that I haven't been able
to figure out.
The build problem was fairly simple. There was a conflict between some typedefs
in src/lisp.h and /usr/include/cygwin/types.h. The conflicting lines are
typedef int intptr_t;
typedef unsigned int uintptr_t;
at around line 803 in src/lisp.h. These are typedef'd differently in
/usr/include/cygwin/types.h:
typedef long intptr_t;
typedef unsigned long uintptr_t;
I got around the problem by surrounding the conflicting typedefs in src/lisp.h
with
#if !defined(__CYGWIN__)
...
#endif
I don't know if that's the "correct" solution, but it allows the build
to
proceed without error.
The runtime problem is a bit more perplexing to me, being more-or-less lisp
illiterate. *Any* time I try to set the mark, whether it's with C-＠ or M-x
set-mark-command or highlighting text with the mouse, I get the message
Symbol's value as variable is void: region
Needless to say, this makes it impossible to do any cut-n-paste operations.
Does anyone have any ideas for what I should look at? I haven't had much
success searching the email archives so far.

Yes, it does. However, I'm somewhat less concerned about this because I can fix
it. Personally, I'm more concerned about the mark/region problem that I have no
idea how to fix.

grep -i intptr_t configure.in configure src/config.h src/config.h.in src/lisp.h
and let's see if there's something missing. Maybe all you have to do
is "autoconf configure.in > configure".
If it's CVS and you've got decent connectivity, "cvs diff -r r21-5-13"
would be useful, too.

If it's CVS and you've got decent connectivity, "cvs diff -r r21-5-13"

When I saw this, I thought perhaps I used the wrong tag when I initially
checked out 21.5. So, I removed the source directory and checked out the source
again using
cvs co -r r21-5-13 -d xemacs-21.5 xemacs
Then I ran configure/make/make install and everything built and installed fine,
so it appears that the build problem was related to the tag I used to check out
the source initially.
However, I still have the runtime problem when trying to set the mark. I
started xemacs, loaded a file, set debug-on-error to true, pressed C-＠ to set
the mark, and got the following backtrace:

Hi Rick,
it's too late now, but you may want to try the cvs update option -A if
you see a problem like this again:
`-A'
Reset any sticky tags, dates, or `-k' options. See *Note Sticky
tags::, for more information on sticky tags/dates.

grep -i intptr_t configure.in configure src/config.h src/config.h.in
src/lisp.h
and let's see if there's something missing. Maybe all you have to do
is "autoconf configure.in > configure".
If it's CVS and you've got decent connectivity, "cvs diff -r r21-5-13"
would be useful, too.

The build problem went away when I checked out the source again using the tag
'r21-5-13', and running "cvs diff -r r21-5-13" as you suggested
indicates that
I do now have a valid source tree. However, I still have the runtime problem
with the mark. I've tried renaming my $HOME/.emacs file (I've not converted to
$HOME/.xemacs/init.el) to eliminate any possibility that something there is
causing the problem, but the behavior is identical.
Any time I try to set the mark with C-＠ or M-x set-mark-command, I get the
message

support; my next guess is that somebody got overzealous in
conditionalizing code on X support. I'll have to rebuild, I'll let

You could download Cygwin X support and build with that. Once the
problem is fixed for native-GUI-only builds, you can either (1) decide
you like it (requires no rebuild!), (2) remove the X support, or (3)
give the --with-x11=no flag to configure.

I did a cvs update to 21.5-b13 today ( 5/18/03 ) and confirm that I get
the same runtime error with Linux/X/non-mule.

Actually, I'm fairly sure about what caused the problem. When I originally
checked out the source, I used the tag 'r21-5-latest-beta'. When I diff'd
that
against r21-5-13, there were *lots* of differences.
