The buffer tabs are still flickering when used with Gnus.
Specifically, whenever I press SPC or DEL in the Summary buffer in
order to scroll the current article by one page, the tabs flicker.
Even if nothing really happen, as when I press DEL and I'm already at
the beginning of the article.
Is this a known bug that's supposed to be fixed, or does it happen
only for me?
P.S.
Did I mention that it would be _really_ cool if the tabs could somehow
respect the background pixmap? The gutter looks very ugly when the
rest of the frame is pixmapized.

Async updates are supposed to fix this. i.e. tabs only get updated when
redisplay gets called. If this is still happening it would be nice to know
why.
P.S.

Well, it's not just tabs. A few more bugs.
1. [Gutters] Cursor movement that affects the region causes gutter flashing
pretty bad, even with a static glyph in the gutter. (This was observed
after running the sample code in 4 below.)
2. [Gutters] gutter-items need removal methods, since installing
them seems pretty complicated.
3. [Gutters] Increasing the widths of the right and left gutters will clobber
parts of the modeline(s). Decreasing them again gets the modeline data
updated, but not the bevels. Eg, change the code below to stick
that XPM in the right-gutter, then remove it (eg, `(set-specifier
right-gutter "")'). Check out the modeline. ^L isn't good enough
on my box, need to iconify then deiconify.

Ok, this is pass 1 at improving the useability of the gutters themselves.
Specifiers are doing my head in so it would be useful if Ben or someone

It occurs to me that I did _not_ remove the buffer-change hooks
installed by the gutter-items.el code immediately after the definition
of add-tabs-to-gutter (or whatever that function is).
Seems unlikely, but I'll try to verify that later (I don't have access
to the machine I'm fooling around with that stuff on at the moment).

I get really bad buffer tab flickering as well. Best way to
reproduce:
M-x occur RET somestring RET
Then move the mouse around in the *Occur* buffer. That buffer has a
mouse motion hook that changes highlighting extents and such. As far
as I can tell, the buffer tabs are redrawn twice for each mouse motion
event, maybe because the window is temporarily selected.
Interestingly, however, this only happens on Linux, and not on
Solaris. I thought this might be related to using motif, but
rebuilding with lesstif on Linux made no difference. I checked that
using a local xemacs vs. remote made no difference. The compiler I
used made no difference. My best guess - a difference in the X
implementation between Solaris and Linux. Probably a tough bug to
track down. As always, access to my binary is available for debugging.
