Hello,
I know this is a dummy question but I just can not find it.
I used
$ ls -A
But there is no .Xdefaults or .Xresources files. I also tried several ways to find it
without success.

You don't have one until you create it yourself, in your home
directory.
If you want examples of useful stuff to put in there, see Help ->
Samples -> Xresources in the menubar.

Samples -> Xresources in the menubar.
2. greyed out in beta, isn't it? (there is Emacs.ad in data-directory)

Nope. Not in 21.4.12 or 21.5.13, for me anyway.
It's greyed out for me too in 21.5.13.
I also get the following error when trying to view enriched.doc
Gui error: Couldn't load font,
"-*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*-*-courier-*-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*"

I'm running under the latest cygwin version but from the build directory.
Don't know if that matters.

OK, once is coincidence, twice is enemy action....
Yup, enemy action. I hate CVS ... forgot to add the file. Fixed in
CVS, should work in <= 21.5.12, since this is a recent change.

I only get one copy of the font spec.
I guess this is a problem of the code assuming X, but I don't know how
to fix, I don't understand MS font handling in XEmacs. You'd think
XEmacs would somehow translate automatically to "Courier:12pt".

while he DOES write from windows:
his MUA is MS Exchange, his charset is windows-1252

there is no sample.Xresources in data-directory, there is only
Emacs.ad, that is perfectly fit as an example of customizing X
resources, but it is not named sample.Xresources
and while i cannot confirm it now (using XEmacs on console) last time
i looked at it, i'm meaning the Help|Samples|Xresources menu, it was
greyed out

Oh, c'mon. This is the developers' list, he asked specifically about
.Xresources. There are lots of people who should know better who post
from Windows boxen (Andy, Ben, Adrian, ... ;-).

Yup. Only works for me. Really: sample.Xresources only exists in my
workspace and in a reference on xemacs-patches, until ten minutes ago.
:-P Damn CVS anyway.

Just to be anal-retentive about a vaguely-related topic:
Even if an .Xdefaults file exists, it will be ignored if xrdb is
being used. If it is, the following will have to be done to make
.Xdefaults take effect:
xrdb -merge .Xdefaults
(I have no idea if Redhat 9 uses it, though.)
