_maybe_ he uses XEmacs on a different platform, but he doesn't say so,
while he DOES write from windows:
his MUA is MS Exchange, his charset is windows-1252
perhaps a couple of questions about his environment were due

Nope. Not in 21.4.12 or 21.5.13, for me anyway.

there is no sample.Xresources in data-directory, there is only
Emacs.ad, that is perfectly fit as an example of customizing X
resources, but it is not named sample.Xresources
and while i cannot confirm it now (using XEmacs on console) last time
i looked at it, i'm meaning the Help|Samples|Xresources menu, it was
greyed out
