How are you sucking in the messages? If you want to have raw data, you
need to use the 'binary coding system... This should work exactly the
same as in FSF Emacs[1].
If you are using insert-file-contents-literally then you need to be
aware that is currently broken under XEmacs (as it was in FSF 20.3).
My patch for fixing has not made it into a released version yet.
However I though gnus already used its own version of
insert-file-contents-literally?
