OK. I thought it looked strange with the =no when I looked through the
configure --help info. Well this would explain it.
I guess there is some reason behind this default but it do seem like
customize and jde-mode (and more?) packages get slightly brooken by
this new default.

This was actually (lightly) documented in the release notes:

The reasoning is that the widgets cause way more problems than they
are worth, under Unix at least. FWIW, I run with buffer tabs under
Windows, and they largely work.

Can you explain? AFAIK, no modes should depend on the existence of
buffer tabs.
